Rapid visual estimation and spectrophotometric determination of tannin content of sorghum grain

Abstract: Antioxidant activities of different vegetables Bitter gourd, Tomato and Spinach (Momordica charantia, Lycopersicon esculentum, Spinacia oleracea) were determined. In addition, rapid visual estimation of tannin content, total phenolic, tested for their free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) in the DPPH (1, 1-dephenyl-2-picrylhydrazil radical) of those samples were assessed. A new technique was used to quickly distinguish between intermediate, moderately high and high tannin content by the development of shades… Show more

“…For each period, samples were pooled and oven dried at 608C for 72 h. Samples were milled and stored in plastic bags for further analyses. All the samples were analyzed to determine their dry matter (DM), ash, ether extract, CP (AOAC, 1980), NDF, ADF (Van Soest et al, 1991), ADF-N (Van Soest et al, 1991;AOAC, 2000), condensed tannins (Price et al, 1978) and total phenol (Price, 1977) content. The chemical composition of maize, grass and foliage is presented in Table 2.…”

“…Method according Price and Butler (1977). In this method, phenolate anion is oxidised to phenolate radical and at the same time hexacyanoferrite (ferricyanide) ion is reduced to hexacyanoferrate (ferrocyanide) forming Prussian blue ) was modified to a semi micro-scale (reaction volume 1 ml).…”
