Rapid tooling in support of accelerated new product development

Abstract: PurposeThe paper examines whether additive manufacturing can deliver durable injection‐moulding tools – fast, reliable, accurate and economic. Researchers from the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), South Africa, are involved in rapid prototyping (RP) applications‐based research, simultaneously using results to support small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) on a national basis – both with contract research and technology transfer[1]. SMEs in South Africa involved in product development, ar… Show more

“…Other applications include injection mould trials using the EOS Alumide material (de Beer et al, 2005a), and the development of novel RT process chains for large sand casting components (Dimitrov et al, 2007a(Dimitrov et al, , 2007b. The use of RP technologies have increased the fidelity of physical models in terms of aesthetics, ergonomics and functionality.…”

“…(e) Approaches and Tools that enable the acceleration of NPD process is also an emerging issue. de Beer, Booysen, Barnard, and Truscott [104] [56], and Fagerstorm and Jackson [109] explored the collaboration aspects of SME's NPD process. The elaboration of tools and techniques is important when conducting NPD process design for SME.…”

“…Research and experience show that one of the well-known roadblocks in the innovation process [14], [23] is the so-called VOD, which describes how R&D projects, originating from basic scientific research, fail to reach commercialization/application. The notion of a 'VOD' is so pervasive in industry that the term appears somewhat matter-of-facty in engineering and manufacturing literature [13]- [16], as many new products simply disappear in the product development VOD, partly due to manufacturing costs, and limited product development budgets, coordination problems, and an inability to secure funding in order to progress to the next level of innovation. This study makes two important contributions.…”
