There is a growing body of research on sexually motivated online communication with minors that has been variously described as luring, grooming and solicitation. Evidence from US studies would suggest an increase in aggressive sexual solicitations, with adolescent girls being more likely to be targeted. Existing research has involved adolescent as well as offender populations, and has largely relied on surveys with young people, interviews and official record data with offenders and ethnographic work with police officers. There have also been a number of studies using chat log data between offenders and adults pretending to be children. In addition, while the use of sexual images has been noted in both offender and victim studies, this has not been critically examined. The present study is different as it used reports from the public to Cybertip.ca to make sense of the types of behaviour that alerted concerned adults, and occasionally young people, to make a report; information available about the young person; information about the suspect, and the interaction between the two. The results of this study show strong similarities with previous research in relation to both offender and victim populations. Implications are discussed in relation to the importance of reporting mechanisms, awareness raising with parents and the need to recognize sexual agency and resilience in many adolescents.

U niv er sitat de BARCELONA Análisis de una escala breve de conductas de riesgo en internet en jóvenes Chilenos Cristóbal Guerra; Irene Montiel; Nancy Molina; Yanko Escalona; Javiera Riquelme; Luis Rojas Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las propiedades psicométricas de una escala breve para evaluar conductas de riesgo en internet. El estudio se desarrolló en dos fases en las que participaron 595 jóvenes residentes en Chile (263 estudiantes universitarios de 18 a 19 años y 332 estudiantes de secundaria de 15 a 19 años). Los participantes respondieron la escala de conductas de riesgo en internet y varias preguntas referidas a sus hábitos y experiencias en la red. Los resultados de análisis factoriales exploratorios y confirmatorios mostraron que la escala se compone de dos factores: «contacto temerario con desconocidos» (donde el riesgo estaría determinado por la vinculación imprudente con potenciales agresores online) y «riesgo indirecto» (que considera conductas esperables para la edad, pero riesgosas, ya que sitúan al joven en el contexto virtual donde los agresores online suelen captar a sus víctimas). Los resultados apoyaron la validez de la escala, puesto que ambos factores se relacionaron del modo esperado con la frecuencia del uso de internet, la edad de inicio en internet, el número de amigos que el joven solo conoce online y con la frecuencia de experimentación de victimización sexual online. Sin embargo, se apreciaron problemas de consistencia interna en el factor «riesgo indirecto», lo que sugiere que es necesario continuar evaluando las propiedades psicométrica de la escala.

In the past three decades, there has been an exponential increase in the worldwide availability of Internet access and devices that are able to access online materials. This literature review investigated whether increased accessibility of Internet child pornography (CP) increases the risk of in-person child sexual exploitation. The current review found little to no evidence that availability of the Internet has increased the worldwide incidence or prevalence of in-person child sexual abuse. In fact, during the time period in which the Internet has flourished, international crime statistics have shown a steady decrease of in-person child sexual abuse. The only exception to this trend is an increase in Internet child pornography or luring offenses (e.g., Stats Can, 2014), which involves child abuse by definition. This article reviews the impact of the Internet on child sexual abuse. It also reviews the characteristics of online CP offenders. Treatment of these offenders and prevention of such offenses is also discussed.
