“…Current novel treatment methods tested in animal models are centred around ameliorating HMP-induced injuries of kidney grafts [51]. A minimally invasive method called rapid sampling microdialysis (rsMD), which was developed in a porcine HMP model [52], may help monitor tissue ATP levels and other metabolic markers during MP in real-time, promoting further investigations into the relationship of MP temperature and renal tissue ATP. Proteolytic enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known to be related to the pathophysiology of fibrotic renal diseases.…”

“…Tissue metabolism and biochemistry was assessed using a novel rapid sampling microdialysis system (rsMD) to sample and quantify levels of tissue lactate in the pancreas graft as previously described. 11 Lactate levels were analyzed in realtime (samples taken every 60 s) after the 24-h SCS and during 5 h of HMP and 2 h of NRP. rsMD assessment was undertaken in phase 2 porcine pancreas experiments but was not available during phase 3 involving unused human grafts; this was due to the rsMD apparatus not being available at the time of experimentation because of the acute and unplanned nature of the experiments (organs become available at any time, including weekends, once they are considered to be unsuitable for transplantation).…”

“…Rogers et al 52 reported on the use of continuous online MD by using microfluidic sensors to study glucose, lactate, and potassium in cortical spreading depolarization. 53 Ideally, when commercially available and approved for human use, continuous MD might improve its temporal resolution and therefore will be able to detect metabolic changes that are short in duration and thus missed with conventional MD.…”
