Rapid radon potential classification using soil-gas radon measurements in the Cooley Peninsula, County Louth, Ireland

Abstract: 16A rapid method for local-scale radon risk assessment using in-situ radon soil-gas measurements and a 17 national-scale soil permeability dataset have been evaluated. We test and validate our approach in a 18 case study at the Cooley Peninsula (County Louth, Ireland). In total 60 radon soil-gas measurements 19 from 48 points were carried out in an area of approximately 160 km 2 over a five day period. Results of 20 radon potential classification are compared with the legislative indoor radon map of Ireland, w… Show more

“…The equilibrium radon concentration in soil gas (C Rn in kBq m −3 ) and the soil permeability (k in m 2 ) were assigned values according to the categorization of each parameter, as proposed by Elio et al (26) and summarized in Table 1.…”

“…We have carried out independent soil gas radon concentration measurements in selected areas in Ireland, following the protocol described in Elío et al (26). These measurements were conducted by first introducing a steel hollow probe in the soil at a typical depth of 75-100 cm, allowing manual sampling of the soil gas with a 150 mL syringe.…”
