PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to establish a general method for achievable speed and accuracy evaluation of additive manufacturing (AM) machines and an objective comparison among them.Design/methodology/approachFirst, a general schematic is defined that enables description of all currently available AM machines. This schematic is used to define two influential factors describing certain parts' properties regarding the machines' yield during manufacturing. A test part is defined, that will enable testing the influence of these factors on the speed and accuracy of manufacturing. A method for implementing and adapting test parts is established for individual machine's testing. This method was used to test four different machines that are predominantly used in Slovenia at the moment.FindingsResearch has proven that the machine's yield had a predominant influence on the achievable manufacturing speeds of all the tested machines. In addition, the results have shown different ranges of achievable manufacturing speeds for individually tested machines. Test parts' measurement results have shown comparable achievable accuracies for all the tested machines.Research limitations/implicationsSpeed evaluation is based on a 2k factorial design that assumes the linearity among individual points of the experiment. This design was chosen to keep the method as simple and quick as possible, in order to perform testing on those machines otherwise used in industrial environments. Accuracy evaluation was limited by a rather small sample size of ten fabricated test parts per machine.Practical implicationsThe presented evaluation method can be used on any existing or future type of AM machine, and their comparative placement regarding achievable manufacturing speed and accuracy.Originality/valueThe presented method can be used to evaluate a machine regardless of the AM technology on which it is based.

Resumo A alta competitividade e a busca por novas tecnologias que diferenciem os produtos industriais indicam um ambiente propício para a utilização de novas tecnologias como fator de inovação. Neste trabalho é proposto o uso do Scanner Tridimensional Móvel, aliado a ferramentas computacionais, para captar imagens e dados em 3D. Com o processo de Digitalização INTRODUÇÃOA alta competitividade e a busca por novas tecnologias que diferenciem os produtos industriais indicam um ambiente propício para a utilização de novas técnicas como fator de inovação em bens de consumo. Neste sentido, é proposto o uso da Tecnologia de Digitalização Tridimensional através de um Scanner 3D Móvel, equipamento que permite capturar in loco dados de determinada superfície permitindo realizar a construção ou re-construção de objetos transformando-os em modelos 3D virtuais.A técnica de digitalização 3D a Laser vem sendo aplicada em diversas áreas tais como: desenvolvimento de produtos, construção de moldes, inspeção, controle de qualidade, etc. A digitalização também é bastante empregada para o armazenamento virtual, o qual permite redução econômica de espaço físico e de transporte, bem como o uso simultâneo dos objetos digitalizados. Os arquivos obtidos após a digitalização são compatíveis com os sistemas CAD/CAE/CAM disponíveis no mercado e, assim, o presente artigo apresenta esta técnica como uma ferramenta para o Design de produtos inovadores. INTEGRAÇÃO COM SISTEMAS CAD/CAE/CAMOs sistemas CAD, CAE e CAM, ou respectivamente ComputerAided Design, Computer-Aided Engineering e Computer-Aided Manufacturing, permitem integrar as tarefas de projeto, de simular/otimizar o produto e de efetuar sua prototipagem/ fabricação [1]. Na metodologia convencional o início se dá pela modelagem geométrica utilizando um sistema CAD, e na seqüência o arquivo gerado pelo sistema CAD é importado por um sistema CAE e/ou CAM. Porém, o desenvolvimento convencional não é aplicável quando o objetivo é redesenvolver ou simular e otimizar partes/moldes/ ferramentas já existentes sem a informação em CAD [2]. Neste caso é necessário aplicar o método não convencional, cujas técnicas permitem capturar a geometria da peça ou protótipo, e gerar um modelo que será usado em sistemas CAE e CAM. Este processo também é conhecido como Engenharia Reversa.A Engenharia Reversa, neste contexto, com o auxílio de sistemas computacionais e de equipamentos a laser, alcança difusão no final dos anos 90. Para obter objetos CAD em 3D, basicamente são necessárias duas etapas fundamentais: a aquisição (através de um digitalizador) e o processamento dos dados gerados [3]. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the properties of several thiol-acrylate photosensitive systems and compare with corresponding acrylate free-radical systems. The potential stereolithography applications of thiol–ene photosensitive systems are also discussed. Design/methodology/approach In the both thiol–ene and acrylate free-radical photosensitive systems, various key performances were characterized. The function group conversions were characterized by real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The tension strength was determined according to the standard ASTM D638-2003, the flexible strength was determined according to ASTM D790-07 and the hardness was measured according to ASTM D2240-05. The volume shrinkage was measured by dilatometer method. The glass transition temperature was analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter. Findings As adding mercapto propionates into acrylate system, the inhibition of polymerization by oxygen was controlled and the flexible performance was improved. In addition, the photosensitive resin showed better tension strength, higher elongation at break and lower volume shrinkage. Among the four mercapto propionates, rigid TEMPIC showed most obvious affect, followed hexa-functional DPMP, tetra-functional PETMP and tri-functional TMMP. Originality/value Although the thiol–ene photosensitive resin has unmatched advantages in performance, there are no reports on the thiol–ene photosensitive resin in the stereolithography application. In this study, thiol–ene photopolymerization material was first tentatively implemented in stereolithography area. Several critical performance parameters were compared between thiol–ene and acrylate free-radical photosensitive systems.
