“…To establish an effective flame retardant coating on fabric, polyelectrolyte complexation via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly has been used as a postmanufactured alternative. In layer-by-layer assembly, the substrate is alternately dipped in individual solutions of oppositely charged components, with the pH adjusted to induce ionic interactions or hydrogen bonding, until a desired weight gain or property is achieved. LbL assembled films have been used in a multitude of applications, including dielectrics, , gas barriers, and flame retardants. In the present work, increasing concentrations of a boron additive are used in conjunction with a layer-by-layer coating of poly­(allylamine hydrochloride) and poly­(sodium phosphate) to render cotton fabric self-extinguishing. With the addition of APB, cotton is rendered flame retardant, reducing the total heat release by 70% and the fire growth capacity by 88%.…”
