“…According to the NAS score, COVID-19 patients demand an ideal N:P ratio close to 1:1 while the legal N:P ratio in Belgium in the ICU is 1:3. Due to the fact that additional pandemic waves of COVID-19 are possible (Kissler et al, 2010), it is necessary to urgently adapt the nursing staff in intensive care in Belgium to maintain quality of care ( Margadant et al2020 , ; Phua et al, 2020 , Sprung et al, 2010 , Rosa et al, 2020 ). “…In this, the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, nurses everywhere are confronted with, and responding to enormous challenges of the COVID‐19 (SARS‐CoV‐2) pandemic, proving their worth, gaining respect and trust, but sadly also suffering the consequences of their work on the frontline with rising rates of health worker infections and mortality. Continued investment in nursing leadership and innovation throughout this global public health emergency will help establish historical worldwide recognition of their unique professional skills and values (Rosa et al 2020). Nurses have always been at the centre of early detection, triage and health promotion during infectious outbreaks, so it is no surprise they are critical contributors during the COVID‐19 pandemic (Turale et al 2020) and in the world's acquisition of new skills and knowledge.…”
