Rapid identification of important periodontal microorganisms by cultivation

Abstract

Two recent developments have made possible rapid isolation and identification of important periodontal species. Selective media have been designed which demonstrate high recovery efficacy of black‐pigmented Bacteroides spp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Eikenella corrodens, Fusobacterium spp., Capnocytophaga spp. and other periodontal bacteria. Presumptive tests for identification of periodontal isolates that are rapid and easy have also been described. Available microbiological methods permit even small microbiology laboratories to screen periodontal samples for suspected pathogens.

Clinical and Microbiological Characterization of Patients with Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis

“…Generally, isolation of microorganisms was carried out by methods previously reported by D' Ercole et al (2008). The samples were analyzed using microbial culture techniques for the presence of periodontopathic bacteria according to Slots (1986). All samples were processed in ≤24 hours at room temperature and immediately incubated in CO2 and anaerobic culture systems.…”
