Rapid Identification of Staphyloccocus aureus in Positive-Testing Blood Cultures by Slidex Staph Plus Agglutination Test

Abstract: In a prospective study from April 2003 until February 2004, we investigated the accuracy of the Slidex Staph Plus agglutination test (bioMérieux, Marcy-l'Étoile, France) on positive blood cultures containing gram-positive cocci in clusters resembling staphylococci. This agglutination test utilizes latex particles sensitized with human fibrinogen and S. aureus-specific monoclonal antibodies. These monoclonal antibodies detect protein A by the Fc fragment of immunoglobulin G as well as different polysaccharide a… Show more

“…Other studies confirm our TAT calculations for discontinuous BC incubation and biochemical bacterial identification and have demonstrated TAT reductions between 73 and 83 h for the bacterial identification report with the use of MALDI-TOF MS analysis (18,19 ). These results suggest that our work flow analysis has correctly identified the work flow components critical for improvement of this important diagnostic procedure.…”

“…Indirect agglutination has already been used in the development haemagglutination techniques, indirect ELISA, indirect immunomagnetic separation, latex agglutination and for indirect immunofluorescence (Rufli 1980;Del Río et al 2003;Jesudason et al 2005;Datta et al 2008;Kerremans et al 2008).…”

“…The work was carried out in two phases. The first evaluation phase involved comparing latex agglutination tests directly on material from positive blood culture bottles, previously shown to be reliable when performed on grown colonies [ 13 , 14 ]. Also the tube coagulase test (TCT) was evaluated in regard to blood volume and plasma species used, which showed to have importance.…”
