High-energy-density Li-S batteries are considered one of the next-generation energy storage systems, but the uncontrolled Li-dendrite growth in Li metal anodes and the shuttling of polysulfides in S cathode severely impede the commercial development of Li-S batteries. Herein, a conductive composite architecture that is made up of bio-derived N-doped porous carbon fiber bundles (N-PCFs) with co-imbedded cobalt and niobium carbide nanoparticles is employed as a multifunctional integrated host for simultaneously addressing the challenges in both Li anodes and S cathodes. The implantation of Co and NbC nanoparticles bestows the N-PCFs matrix with synergistically enhanced degree of graphitization, electrical conductivity, hierarchical porosity, and surface polarization. Theoretical calculations and experimental results show that NbC with specific lithiophilic and sulfiphilic features can synchronously regulate the Li and S electrochemistry by realizing homogeneous lithium deposition with suppressed Li-dendrite growth and exerting catalytic effects for promoting the polysulfide conversion together with fast Li 2 S nucleation. Hence, the assembled Li-S full batteries exhibit a superb rate capability (704 mAh g −1 at 5 C) and cycling life (≈82.3% capacity retention after 500 cycles) at a sulfur loading over 3.0 mg cm −2 , as well as high reversible areal capacity (>6.0 mAh cm −2) even at a higher sulfur loading of 6.7 mg cm −2 .

Exploring new battery technologies will promote the advance of energy storage systems. Designing a symmetrical‐structured rechargeable battery with the same electrode materials is a meaningful exploration for battery technology. Here, a solution‐processed all‐V2O5 rechargeable battery with V2O5 as both anode and cathode is presented, in which the anionic/cationic redox reactions are decoupled by precisely clamping its working potential windows. The battery shows good electrochemical performance with high capacity of 151 mAh g−1 at 0.10 C, good rate performance with 70% capacity retention when the current increases from 0.10 to 5 C, and promising cycling stability over 83% capacity retention after 900 cycles at 1 C. Moreover, the battery is highly profitable for simplified fabrication and scalable production, which benefits from its symmetrical configuration as well as the solution‐processed strategy. This work offers a new paradigm to construct advanced symmetrical energy storage devices.

High-sulfur petroleum coke (HSPC), that is a by-product from slag oil in the coking process of refining, shows versatility values in practical applications and, however, concentrates the majority of organic sulfur. Herein, we design and construct a highly effective CTAB@HPA composites to be explored for the catalytic oxidative desulfurization of HSPC under mild conditions using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as the extractant. The results demonstrate that the sulfur content of HSPC could be strikingly reduced from 4.46 wt% to 2.48 wt% under 60 °C and atmospheric pressure, and that the organic sulfur in HSPC is mainly oxidized to sulfoxide, sulfone and sulfate, which latter can be directly separated from petroleum coke. Moreover, the effect of reaction conditions on the desulfurization performance of HSPC as well as the catalytic oxidation reaction kinetic of HSPC desulfurization was systematically investigated. Furthermore, a mechanism for the oxidative desulfurization of HSPC over CTAB@HPA catalysts was proposed. Therefore, this work provides new insight into how to construct active catalysts for the desulfurization of HSPC under mild conditions.
