Current turfgrass fertilizer recommendations do not account for plant‐available soil N mineralized from labile C fractions. The Solvita Soil CO2–Burst (SSCB) test can measure mineralizable C via soil CO2 respiration. This study was conducted across 3 yr (2014–2016) in Connecticut to determine: (i) if SSCB–C concentrations are correlated to responses from predominately Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort.] lawns, and (ii) the probability of turfgrass responses being equal to or greater than responses from common urea rates in relation to SSCB–C concentrations. Randomized complete block design field experiments were set out with 23 rates of organic fertilizer (0–2000 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and four different rates of urea (50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1). Yearly spring soil samples were analyzed for SSCB–C concentrations and correlated with turfgrass responses. Growth and quality responded positively and linearly (P < 0.001) to SSCB–C concentrations, but variability was high and correlations were relatively weak. When spring soil SSCB–C concentrations were ≥91, 113, 166, and 211 mg kg−1, there was a ≥90% probability that overall combined responses across species and variables would be equal to or greater than responses obtained from urea rates of 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. The SSCB test has promise for predicting the probability of soils supporting turfgrass whose performance equals or exceeds benchmark values. This would be helpful in guiding N fertilization, but high variability within the test may limit its predictive ability.

Efforts to address economic and environmental concerns surrounding nitrogen (N) have motivated attempts to improve estimates of plant‐available N in soil. Several soil health indicators, including CO2 burst, permanganate oxidizable carbon (C) (POXC), and autoclaved‐citrate extractable (ACE) soil protein, assess labile C and N, and therefore may help to estimate soil N mineralization in long‐term cover cropping systems (>3 years). This study evaluated the relationship of CO2 burst, POXC, ACE‐soil protein, and pre‐sidedress nitrate test (PSNT) with agronomic optimum N rate (AONR) in corn (Zea mays L.). The study also looked at relationship between other soil test and corn yield parameters, relative yield (RY) and yield without N sidedress at 25 long‐term cover crop sites across Virginia. Results showed relatively weak correlations between AONR and CO2 burst, POXC, ACE‐soil protein, and NO3‐N (r = 0.00 to −0.48), which indicates that these soil health tests may not reliably predict soil N availability and corn yield. Corn yield with zero‐sidedress N rate had a negative relationship with cover crop C:N ratio (r = −0.66) and a positive relationship with cover crop N content (r = 0.59), and NO3‐N at pre‐planting (r = 0.54) and sidedress (PSNT) (r = 0.63). The PSNT showed a better relationship (r = 0.65) compared to 72‐h CO2 burst (r = 0.48) with RY. Soil health indicators (CO2 burst, POXC and ACE‐soil protein) resulted in a poor or no relationship with AONR. Our results indicate that the PSNT was a more reliable indicator of the sidedress N rate in corn.

Core Ideas The Solvita 1‐d CO2 mineralization test could be a new tool to improve in‐season N rate recommendations for corn. Solvita and soil NO3–N tests may be useful for predicting the level of early‐season N mineralization from winter cover crops (WCCs). Soil NO3–N collected at the V4 growth stage of corn at 0 to 15 cm was positively correlated (R2 = 0.45) with corn check yield. Neither the Solvita nor the presidedress nitrate test detected WCC N mineralization consistently enough to use them in rate recommendations. Environmental and economic goals encourage the use of soil N tests to improve fertilizer N (FN) management in corn (Zea mays L.). Recently, the Solvita 1‐d CO2 burst test, which proposes to estimate soil potentially mineralizable N (PMN), has been promoted as a tool for FN recommendations. We aimed to compare the Solvita test with the established presidedress nitrate test (PSNT) for estimating optimum sidedressed FN rates in a typical corn crop rotation in the Mid‐Atlantic United States that includes winter annual cover crops (WCCs). Research was conducted at eight locations from 2012 to 2014. Three WCC treatments [cereal rye (Secale cereale L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth ssp. villosa) or a cereal rye–hairy vetch mix] were the main plots and 10 FN rates were the subplots. The WCCs affected preplanting (PP) Solvita results at one location, V4 NO3–N at 0 to 15 cm (PSNT15) at four locations, and V4 NO3–N at 0 to 30 cm (PSNT30) at two locations. Correlations between soil N test parameters and relative corn yields ranged from 0.31 to 0.13. Values for PSNT15 and PSNT30 correlated positively with corn check yields (r = 0.41 and 0.39 respectively). Solvita did not provide additional information to PSNT for predicting preplanting PMN, V4 PMN, or corn check yields. The advantages of the Solvita test were its simplicity, speed of analysis, and lower coefficient of variation relative to the PSNT. Neither method was consistently effective for predicting WCC effects on soil N or relative corn yield.
