Research and development at the Royal Aircraft Establishment leading to the Type 11, Type 12 and Compact processors for 70 mm and wide film are reviewed, stressing the importance of the balance between photographic considerations of image quality and consistency and the engineering and performance requirements of minimum size and logistics necessary for mobile equipment. In order to obtain the high output rates which are demanded, the efficiency of the various processes was investigated and future prognostications are attempted. The use of the machines for survey and colour processing is also described.
