Rapid development of proteomics in China: from the perspective of the Human Liver Proteome Project and technology development

Abstract: Proteomics focuses on the systematic identification and quantification of entire proteomes and interpretation of proteins' biological functions. During the last decade, proteomics in China has grown much faster than other research fields in life sciences. At the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, the rapid development of high-resolution and high-speed mass spectrometry makes proteomics a powerful tool to study the mechanisms underlying physiological/pathological processes in organisms. This ar… Show more

“…UC is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by chronic recurrent, and the specific aetiology and pathogenesis of UC are still not clear. Proteomics is a discipline that systematically quantifies all the proteins in cells or organisms and elucidates their biological functions, it has enormous potential for early diagnosis, prevention, and prognosis prediction of diseases[ 17 , 18 ]. In recent years, proteomics has gradually been applied to the study of UC, providing strong support for the research of pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of UC.…”

“…21 The concept of proteomics was first proposed by Peter James in 1997, and International Human Protein Organization established in 2001 further promotes the development of proteomics. 22 Proteomics is used to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze all proteins in cells, tissues or organisms, and to reveal the protein interaction network and dynamic regulation process in complex biological systems at the protein level. 23 In addition to relying on mass spectrometry, the research of protein also depends on the protein database based on gene sequence.…”

“…At the same time, it was the first time that Chinese team led international scientific research project. (CN)HLPP attracted more than 70 laboratories, and China made great progress in the proteome research . As an important component part in HPP, HLPP contributed information about human liver proteins in three aspects: expression and modification profiles; protein interaction and localization maps; sample, antibody, and data repositories.…”
