Rapid determination of quinine in SA drinks by reversed phase ion pair chromatography

Abstract: Quinine can easily be determined in soft drinks by means of reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography. Sample preparation is not necessary. Quinine is detected by fluorescence and UV spectrophotometry by continuous monitoring of the column effluent. A rectilinear response is obtained in the concentration range of 20--100 mg/l. The complete assay procedure takes about 8 min.

“…8 Several methods have been reported for the determination of QnCl including spectrophotometry, [9][10][11] chromato-graphy [12][13][14][15] and fluorometry. 16 The present work describes new selective membrane electrodes of the conventional type, for the determination of QnCl in pure solution and in pharmaceuticals preparations.…”

“…Chromatographic techniques, especially HPLC, have played the most important role in facilitating the detection and quantification of these compounds. Techniques used have included HPLC, [3][4][5][6][7] GC, 8 spectrophotometry, [9][10][11][12] fluorimetry, 13,14 immunoassay, 15,16 and chemiluminescence. 17 However, these methods suffer disadvantages, such as poor sensitivity, poor selectivity or a timeconsuming procedure.…”

“…Many analytical methods for the determination of quinine have been described, including direct [-4, 5] and indirect [1,6] spectrophotometric determination, highperformance liquid chromatographic [7][8][9], gas chromatography [10], fluorodensitometric measurement after separation by thin layer chromatography [11], fluorimetric method [12,13], and inmunoassay [14,15]. We have developed a 4th-order derivative spectrophotometry to determine quinine in soft drinks where colouring matter and other additives are also present.…”
