Rapid decomposition of Direct Blue 6 in neutral solution by Fe–B amorphous alloys

Abstract: The development of environmental-friendly materials for the highly-efficient purification of dye-containing wastewater is important and attractive. In this work, Fe-B amorphous alloy ribbons were fabricated and employed to degrade the azo dye, Direct Blue 6. It shows that Fe-B binary amorphous alloys possess low reaction activation energy (25.43 kJ mol À1 ) and much higher degrading efficiency than their crystalline counterparts and the commercial iron powders. Under the same experimental conditions (25 C, ini… Show more

“…Since ribbon samples are beneficial to the experimental operation, the degradation mechanism of MG were also investigated based on the ribbons. Most related reports have demonstrated that the degradation efficiency is greatly deteriorated after annealing treatment due to the disappearance of residual stress and metastable structure [1,5,6,12]. However, several recent reports have shown that the chemical heterogeneity of nanocrystals caused by annealing may be beneficial for the degradation of azo dyes.…”

“…Different fabrications usually induce different statuses of MG products, which may strongly affect the efficiency of the MG. Powders, glassy thin films [4] or melt-spun ribbons [5][6][7] are also used in water treatments. Melt spinning is a widely used technology in typical industrial fields [8,9], and thus the ribbons are easy to fabricate.…”

“…The ball milled powder had 60 times faster degradation efficiency than the gas atomized powder due to its higher specific surface area, and was 200 times faster than the commercial iron powder. It has also been found that the degradation process can be accelerated through compositional control . Xie et al.…”

“…The master alloy ingot of Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 was firstly prepared by arc melting under a Ti-gettered argon atmosphere five times to achieve homogenous chemical composition. From the master alloy, the glassy ribbons were fabricated by ejecting melting master alloy on a single copper roller [49][50][51]. The wheel speed of the copper roller used was about 30 m/s.…”
