Rapid characterization of hypanthium and seed in wild and cultivated rosehip: application of Raman microscopy combined with multivariate analysis

Abstract: Rosehip (pseudo-fruit) of dog rose ( Rosa canina L.) is highly valued, and owing to nutritional and sensory properties it has a significant place in the food industry. This work represents an innovative report focusing on the evaluation of the phytochemical composition of rosehips (hypanthium and seed) grown in different locations in Serbia, using Raman microspectroscopy combined with multivariate data analysis. Some significant differences arose between the analysed rosehip samples wit… Show more

“…Life Sci. Forum 2022, 2, x 2 of 6 method may provide chemical and structural information with minimum requirements for sample preprocessing [11,12]. The aim of this study was to assess the chemical composition of seeds from Rosa canina L. hips using Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography, with the focus on the seed oil fatty acid composition.…”

“…Raman microspectroscopy was focused on the direct analysis of seeds which were longitudinally cut at room temperature prior to analysis. Spectra were recorded in the range 200-1800 cm −1 , using an XploRA Raman spectrometer (Horiba Jobin Yvon, Kyoto, Japan) following the procedure described in the literature [12]. The spectra preprocessing was realized using Spectragryph software, version 1.2.13 [13].…”

“…Rosa spp. are native to cold and highland areas but demonstrate high environmental adaptability, as they are widespread plants in different climate regions such as Turkey [ 4 , 18 , 19 , 20 ], Slovakia [ 21 ], Serbia [ 14 , 22 , 23 ], Croatia [ 24 , 25 ], Romania [ 26 ], or Lithuania [ 10 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…While the score plot shows whether the samples are different, the corresponding loading plot shows the difference in the spectra and different polymorphs of the samples. Typically, two or three PCs could explain the most influential variables of the spectral variations (da Mata et al., 2022; Liu et al., 2015; Pećinar et al., 2021; Radulescu et al., 2021).…”
