Ranking of By-products for Single Cell Oil Production. Case of Latvia

Abstract: Single cell oil is considered as a promising alternative to fish and vegetable oils. Due to the ability of oleaginous microorganisms to produce significant amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), single cell oil can be used for human and animal consumption. In this context, marine microorganisms of the class Labyrinthulomycetes are particularly highlighted in scientific literature. In order to clarify the possibilities for the use of microorgan… Show more

“…The method uses the best alternative and worst alternative to define the best alternative [15]. TOPSIS method has been used to compare the possible use of production residues in producing value-added products, such as single-cell oil, from different factories, described in Racko E. et al [16]. The main advantages of TOPSIS are the opportunity of an infinite number of criteria and alternatives, a comparatively simple calculation method, and no need for specific software or specific programming techniques.…”

“…The use of lipids extracted from Labyrinthulomycetes microorganisms has been extensively researched for its application in food and has several nutritional advantages [184]- [195]. Lipids derived from Labyrinthulomycetes are rich in high-quality polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) [196]- [198]. These fatty acids can be used not only as an energy source in ketogenic metabolism, but EPA and DHA also play a crucial role in brain function, nervous system, immune system, cardiovascular, and other organ system functions [199]- [205].…”

“…Labyrinthulomycetes SCO are used as an alternative to fish oils in baby formula, as DHA is essential for the development of infant brain and nervous system [184], [186]- [188], [199], [200]. The lipid content of Labyrinthulomycetes microorganisms is typically 60-80 % of the total cell biomass [196]- [198], thus mixing such and similar oils with spirulina biomass can provide appropriate macromolecular ratios for adequate nutrition in a ketogenic diet.…”
