Ranibizumab Prefilled Syringes: Benefits of Reduced Syringe Preparation Times and Less Complex Preparation Procedures

Abstract: Syringe preparation times for ranibizumab intravitreal injections are significantly shorter with the PFS than with the vial. The time saved by using the PFS may benefit physicians and nurses, and the simplicity of the injection preparation process with the PFS is advantageous.

“…The ready-to-use syringe simplifies the injection considerably, so that in some countries, injections by non-ophthalmologists can also be carried out more easily, quickly and safely. 54,55 However, glass syringes such as the approved ranibizumab pre-filled syringe are prone to breakage and have a relatively large weight compared to plastic syringes.…”

“…By eliminating a number of steps in the previous injection preparation, reduced injection time is a significant advantage to using the ranibizumab PFS. Souied et al15 demonstrated a 27%–39% reduction in syringe preparation time when using the PFS rather than the standard ranibizumab vial. Likewise, a previous multicenter study comparing preparation times using traditional syringes vs the PFS revealed that the use of a PFS saved an average of 25.5 seconds 16.…”
