Rangeland Ecosystem Goods and Services: Values and Evaluation of Opportunities for Ranchers and Land Managers

Abstract: The Sustainable Rangelands Roundtable (SRR) will promote social, ecological and economic sustainability of rangelands through the development and widespread use of the criteria and indicators for rangeland assessments and by providing a forum for dialogue on sustainability of rangelands. SRR envisions a future in which rangelands in the United States provide a desired mix of economic, ecological and social benefits to current and future generations; and criteria and indicators for monitoring and assessing the … Show more

“…We demonstrate that it is possible to quantify in dollars rangeland EGS from each of these three categories using economic methods applied to a scientifically valid ecological framework that focuses on transitions between states. In so doing, we add support to the argument by Maczko et al 5 that monetizing the diverse benefits that flow from rangeland ecological processes is technically feasible and should be on the agenda of applied agricultural and resource economists.…”

“…The sagebrush steppe ecosystem provides many valuable ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat for rare species, food, water infiltration, carbon sequestration, and recreation (Maczko et al. ). Thus, understanding the relative importance of drivers of community structure could have direct implications for the management of this system and the types and quantities of services provided.…”

“…Good condition (i.e., minimal invasive grasses and a robust native herbaceous understory) ecosystem patches of Wyoming big sagebrush are increasingly recognized as critical for sage grouse ❖ www.esajournals.org habitat as well as for the multitude of other goods and services provided by these ecosystems (Maczko et al 2011). These areas likely have more post-fire resilience and resistance to invasive species (Wrobleski and Kauffman 2003, Chambers et al 2014b) than that often described for the xeric end of the sagebrush steppe (Brooks et al 2004(Brooks et al , 2015.…”
