Randomized trial of two beta-mimetic drugs (ritodrine and fenoterol) in acute intra-partum tocolysis

Abstract: The uterine inhibitory effect and potential maternal and fetal side effects of two beta-mimetic compounds, ritodrine hydrochloride and fenoterol hydrobromide, were compared in a randomized trial. The drugs were administered by intravenous infusion to 24 healthy term nulliparous women during effective first-stage labour; each of them received fenoterol (1, 2, or 4 microgram/min) or ritodrine (100, 200, or 400 microgram/min). There was no difference between the drugs in the intensity of the uterine inhibition. H… Show more

“…Glucose 5% was given as placebo at a constant infusion rate of 0.4ml/min. Dosing was based on previous studies using atosiban or ritodrine [3,[17][18][19][20] and on the manufacturers prescriptions. Each period, a total volume of 48ml was infused.…”

“…b-mimetic drugs (ritodrine, terbutaline, fenoterol, buphenine, and hexoprenaline), nitroglycerin, and magnesium sulfate have been used as tocolytic agents during delivery. [15][16][17][18][19][20] Magann et al 21 showed in 1993 the superiority of terbutaline over magnesium sulfate in acute tocolysis. To date, there have been no comparative studies between b-mimetics and nitroglycerin in acute tocolysis.…”

“…The b-mimetic agents, ritodrine and fenoterol, administered via intravenous infusion, have proven efficacy for short-term tocolysis. Either tocolytic can be used as first-line tocolysis in patients without serious cardiovascular disease [1][2][3]. Nevertheless, there are conflicting results concerning the effectiveness of oral b-mimetic agents in the maintenance treatment of preterm labor.…”
