Randomized trial of HPV4 vaccine assessing the response to HPV4 vaccine in two schedules among Peruvian female sex workers

Abstract: Two hundred female sex workers (FSWs) in Lima, Peru were randomized to receive HPV4 vaccine in the standard (0, 2, 6 months) or a modified schedule (0, 3, 6 months). One hundred and eighty four (92%) participants completed 3 doses of vaccine. Baseline seropositive rates were 58% for HPV6, 22.5% for HPV11, 41.5% for HPV16, and 13% for HPV18. The final geometric mean antibody titer (GMT) following vaccination was significantly greater for women who were seropositive at baseline compared to seronegative women: HP… Show more

“…This is also consistent with previous studies' results observed after two or three doses of qHPV vaccine when using total IgG assay 21,27,28 which has a higher sensitivity when compared with Merck cLIA assay, especially for the detection of antibodies to HPV18. 21, As data from previous follow-up studies indicate an excellent protection even in individuals with very low or undetectable postvaccination antibodies, 29,30 the excellent persistence of antibodies in preadolescent girls vaccinated three years earlier with two doses of qHPV suggests that their protection will be retained.…”

“…This is especially true in groups with high HPV exposure, including female sex workers (FSWs; Brown et al, 2012; Brown, Carcamo, Blas, Valderrama, & Halsey, 2010; Brown, Blas, Heidari, Carcamo, & Halsey, 2013). Knowledge of HPV as a risk factor for cervical cancer varies widely, and people often confuse HPV with other sexually transmitted infections (Brown et al, 2010; Klug, Hukelmann, & Blettner, 2008; Malta et al, 2007; Tarimo et al, 2011).…”

“…Although less than half (44.2%) had heard of HPV, after receiving information regarding the infection and its association with cancer, almost all (97.5%) wanted to receive the vaccine. This group also demonstrated a 92% completion rate of the 3-dose HPV vaccine in this population in a trial comparing two dosing schedules (29). As in this study, FSWs in Thailand also demonstrated low knowledge levels regarding HPV despite the high rates of cervical cancer in the region.…”
