Randomized, Controlled Trial of an Internet-Facilitated Intervention for Reducing Binge Eating and Overweight in Adolescents

Abstract: Results suggest that an Internet-facilitated intervention is moderately effective in short-term weight loss and weight maintenance and yields a large reduction in binge eating. This study also demonstrates that weight management and reduction of eating disorder psychopathological features can be achieved simultaneously by using an easily disseminated, Internet-facilitated program.

“…Three studies 47,55,58 used attention controls, whereby participants in the control group received non-adaptive information on a similar topic, or received a similarly interactive intervention, but on an unrelated health topic. Thirteen studies 48,50,[62][63][64]71,72,75,76,78,82,84 used a wait-list control group that received the intervention after the data collection period. Two studies tested their intervention against a therapist-conducted intervention, 42,74 or the e-learning intervention plus a therapist-conducted intervention.…”

“…Such technologies are increasingly used as interventions to address health problems such as self-management of chronic disease, counseling children with traumatic brain injury, and binge eating among teens. [25][26][27] In the NICU, several webcam programs are currently available, such as NICView 28 and Angel Eye at the University of Arkansas. 29,30 Another program (BabyCareLink) at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center allows parents to view their infant and also provides informational and emotional support by using resources such as an online library and links to external resources.…”

“…Doyle and colleagues reported few differences in either changes in body weight or disordered eating when comparing an Internet-based program to usual care 4 months following the interventions . A second study reported that compared with a waiting-list control, overweight participants in the Internet-based intervention experienced reductions in LOC eating episodes, disordered eating attitudes, and BMI z-scores, through a 9-month follow-up assessment (Jones et al, 2008). Interestingly, the authors reported that the rates of adherence to the Internet intervention were low (Jones et al, 2008).…”
