Randomized controlled clinical trial of oral health-related quality of life in patients wearing conventional and self-ligating brackets

Abstract: ObjectiveThe aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients treated with conventional, active self-ligating (ASL), and passive self-ligating (PSL) brackets in different therapeutic phases.MethodsSixty patients (mean age 18.3 years; 29 males and 31 females) requiring orthodontic treatment were randomly and equally assigned to receive conventional (Victory Series), ASL (In-Ovation R), or PSL (Damon 3MX) brackets. OHRQoL was measured with a… Show more

“…However, they could not be synthesized in the meta‐analysis due to methodologic differences. One 3‐arm paralleled RCT comparing the oral health‐related quality of life in patients wearing ASLBs, PSLBs or CBs concludes that no bracket system seems to be superior . One study comparing microbiological parameters between PSLB and CB also concludes bracket design does not impact periodontal hygiene .…”

“…Awareness of how facial appearance affects quality of life (QoL) has rapidly increased the demand for orthodontic treatment. 1 The motivating factors for undergoing orthodontic treatment are enhanced dental and facial esthetics and, consequently, minimized psychosocial problems, which contribute to QoL. 2,3 Many studies [4][5][6][7] have explored the physical, social, or psychological effects of orthodontic treatment and how discomfort and pain affect these aspects of QoL.…”

“…3,4,[6][7][8] A number of studies have addressed experiences of discomfort and pain before and after the placement of orthodontic appliances, as well as in different phases of treatment. 4,[7][8][9] Other studies have assessed the dental and social impacts of wearing orthodontic appliances. 3,6 Changes in OHRQoL attributed to orthodontic treatment have been measured in longitudinal studies involving Chinese adolescents.…”
