Randomized clinical trial of encapsulated and hand-mixed glass-ionomer ART restorations: one-year follow-up

Abstract: ObjectiveThis prospective, randomized, split-mouth clinical trial evaluated the clinical performance of conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC; Riva Self-Cure, SDI), supplied in capsules or in powder/liquid kits and placed in Class I cavities in permanent molars by the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach.Material and MethodsA total of 80 restorations were randomly placed in 40 patients aged 11-15 years. Each patient received one restoration with each type of GIC. The restorations were evaluated aft… Show more

“…To our knowledge, there is only one RCT that compares GIC Hand-Mixed and Encapsulated, and the authors classi ed the used GIC as "medium viscosity" in permanent molar occlusal cavities, with results of one-year follow-up 16 . This study shows a higher success rate of encapsulated GIC, different from our ndings.…”

“…As the manufacturer pre-dose the powder and liquid inside a capsule, the powder-liquid ratio is standardized, and the mechanical mixing, provides a more homogeneous material 14,15 . There is a lack of information about the impact of different GIC supply forms on restoration survival. To the best of our knowledge, only one clinical trial compared different GIC presentations on occlusal restorations in permanent molars, with promising results for the encapsulated version 16 .…”

“…Optouse pela realização deste tratamento com cimento ionômero de vidro modificado por resina, por ser este o material de primeira escolha na odontopediatria. Além disso, apresenta alta resistência e adesividade às estruturas dentárias, é biocompatível, possui boa liberação de flúor e capacidade de vedamento marginal à penetração bacteriana [17][18][19] .…”
