Randomized clinical trial of day-careversusovernight-stay laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Abstract: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed as a day-case procedure with a low rate of complications and admissions/readmissions. Patient acceptance in terms of quality of life variables is similar to that for cholecystectomy with an overnight stay. The day-care strategy is associated with a reduction in cost.

“…Gurusamy et al [16] reported lower wound infection rate in the no drain group than in the drain group, maybe because of the presence of a foreign body. Johansson et al [22] safely performed day-case LC with low rates of re-admissions. However, the insertion of drain can delay the discharge and, thus, decrease any saving in costs of day-case LC [16].…”

“…Improvements in anaesthetics and increased surgeons laparoscopic experience have encouraged surgeons to perform LC as an elective outpatient procedure with only a few hours' hospital stay post-surgery. Many studies and literature reported the effectiveness and safety of ambulatory LC in selected patients, with reduced cost and high level of patient satisfaction [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
