Randomized Clinical Trial of 24% Oral Sucrose to Decrease Pain Associated With Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion in Preterm and Term Newborns

Abstract: Since this is the first study to evaluate the pain-blunting effects of 24% sucrose administration before PIV catheter insertion, replication of this study is needed before widespread application of findings.

“…24,42,44-99 50 (86%) studies showed sugar to be superior in narrative synthesis, 24,42, and eight (14%) showed equivalence (appendix p 8). [92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99] Therefore, the NPGG had a high certainty in this estimate of effect (appendix p 7). 14 studies (n=920) compared oral sugar directly with expressed breastmilk.…”

“…Of the 11 articles chosen (see Table 1), 8 stated that sucrose could reduce pain in the invasive process in infants, while 3 stated that sucrose was ineffective in reducing pain in infants, either while the invasive process was ongoing or after it was completed (Cook et al, 2017;Gao et al, 2018;Gouin et al, 2018). The concentration of sucrose used to reduce pain in invasive procedures is 20% (Gao et al, 2018).…”

“…The international study (21) aimed at determining whether the 24% sucrose solution administered orally, before insertion of a peripheral intravenous catheter, decreases the neonatal pain found no changes in pain responses between the groups of newborns. The study results did not confirm whether 24% sucrose administered before insertion of peripheral intravenous catheter interferes in the child's pain response.…”
