Randomised controlled trial of colostrum to improve intestinal function in patients with short bowel syndrome

Abstract: BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Colostrum is rich in immunoregulatory, antimicrobial and trophic components supporting intestinal development and function in newborns. We assessed whether bovine colostrum could enhance intestinal adaptation and function in adult short bowel syndrome (SBS) patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twelve SBS patients in this randomised cross-over study received 4 weeks oral supplement of bovine colostrum or an iso-energetic and iso-proteinaceous control (2.4 MJ/d, 500 ml/day) separated by a 4-week wa… Show more

“…The macronutrient composition was analyzed by a milkoScan analyzer (FOSS; WPC for the MF diet) or provided by the producer (AFI; WPC for the CF and GF diets). The macronutrient composition of BC was analyzed by Eurofins Steins Laboratorium (Holstebro) (22). LF, IgG, IGF-I, and TGFb2 were analyzed as the bioactive markers.…”

“…To determine the intestinal monosaccharide absorptive function after the MEN period, we measured the concentration of plasma Macronutrient composition of bovine colostrum (BC) and bovine milk (BM) was calculated on the basis of a previous study and literature (23,44). Macronutrient composition of reconstituted whole milk powder (WMP) and infant formula (IF) was calculated on the basis of production specifications provided by manufacturers.…”
