Properties of strontium tetraborate (SBO) and features of as-grown anti-parallel domains are summarized. From the point of view of nonlinear optics, these domains form nonlinear photonic crystals (NPC). Applications of NPC to the deep ultraviolet generation and fs pulse diagnostics are described. NPC and SBO are prospective media for the creation of a widely tunable source of fs pulses in the vacuum ultraviolet and for autocorrelation diagnostics of broadly tunable sources.

We study the frequency doubling in a quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal consisting of periodically poled structures mediated by random layers. These structures can be formed by new local impact methods for ferroelectric crystal structuring. The statistical frequency doubling theory is developed for such structures. At present, nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) are widely used for conversion of coherent laser radiation into new frequencies [1,2]. Nonlinear photonic crystals combine the high conversion efficiency, compactness, and exceptional universality in designing structures for target nonlinear optical processes. For these purposes, the electric field poling of ferroelectric crystals was developed [3]. At the same time, the local impact methods for structuring ferroelectrics have recently been proposed to fabricate NPCs. These methods include electron beam writing [4,5], atomic force microscope writing [6,7], and direct laser beam pattering [8,9]. The advantage of these methods is the possibility of fabricating arbitrary high-quality domain structures on the submicrometer and nanosized scales [10]. The drawback of these methods is the restriction imposed on the writing area size, which typically varies within 0.020.2 cm. Fabrication of relatively large (about 1 cm and more) structures faces certain difficulties. Although these structures can gradually be formed, the unavoidable random phase shifts at the transition between specific regular sections are caused by insufficiently accurate sample positioning during fabrication, which can result in the low nonlinear conversion efficiency.The statistical phenomena related to the randomness of the nonlinear media parameters drew attention to nonlinear optics long time ago (see studies [11,12] In view of the aforesaid, the effect of random phase shifts on the nonlinear optical processes in NPCs fabricated by the new local impact methods is of special interest. In this work, we investigate the second harmonic generation (SHG) in an assembled nonlinear photonic crystal with periodical inserted random layers and establish a new type of the second harmonic (SH) intensity oscillations.We consider the NPC design shown in Fig. 1. The NPC structure is assembled from periodically poled structures mediated by uniform layers with the random thickness fluctuations. The average random layer thickness was taken to be equal to a semiperiod of the periodic structure and the layer thickness fluctuations were assumed to obey the normal distribution law (with the standard deviation ξ 2q ). For certainty, we assume the number of random layers to be equal to the number N + 1 of the periodically poled structures consisting of 2M + 1 domains. We observe second harmonic generation via random quasi-phase-matching in a 2.0 m periodically poled, 1-cm-long, z-cut lithium tantalate. Away from resonance, the harmonic output profiles exhibit a characteristic pattern stemming from a stochastic domain distribution and a quadratic growth with the fundamental excitation, as well as a broadband spectral response. Broadband frequency conversion can take place in both isotropic polycrystalline ferroelectrics [3] and in crystals with randomly distributed antiparallel ferroelectric micro-domains [5,6]; the former are easily accessible and support a linear trend in terms of the generated second harmonic (SH) versus the input fundamental power, while the latter exhibit the standard quadratic dependence of the generated SH versus the input fundamental power, with higher conversion efficiencies. The presence of antiparallel ferroelectric domains can intrinsically depend on the specific growth technique, as is the case for strontium barium niobate (SBN, d 33 = 12 pm/V) [4]. Here, a random domain distribution is generated during boule preparation [7,11]. In SBN and with reference to SH generation, Horowitz and coworkers studied the role of microdomains superimposed to an ordered pattern [6]. In several ferroelectric crystals with a second-order susceptibility, however, electric field poling for quasiphase matching (QPM) via domain inversion is the most used approach for engineering nonlinear gratings and realizing a variety of bulk and guidedwave structures for signal processing based on frequency conversion [15,16]. An intense electric field applied across the thickness of a ferroelectric crystal relates to the probability of domain nucleation. Domain nucleation, however, is a stochastic process with a random trend due to various defects, including vacancies, impurities, ions in wrong lattice sites, etc.[17].
