Ramsey Numbers and Adiabatic Quantum Computing

Abstract: The graph-theoretic Ramsey numbers are notoriously difficult to calculate. In fact, for the twocolor Ramsey numbers R(m, n) with m, n ≥ 3, only nine are currently known. We present a quantum algorithm for the computation of the Ramsey numbers R(m, n). We show how the computation of R(m, n) can be mapped to a combinatorial optimization problem whose solution can be found using adiabatic quantum evolution. We numerically simulate this adiabatic quantum algorithm and show that it correctly determines the Ramsey n… Show more

“…Although the main focus of the quantum annealing computational paradigm [17][18][19] has been on solving discrete optimization problems in a wide variety of application domains [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27], it has been also introduced as a potential candidate to speed up computations in sampling applications. Indeed, it is an important open research question whether or not quantum annealers can sample from Boltzmann distributions more efficiently than traditional techniques [4,5,9].…”

“…In the Ramsey number algorithm (RNA) [3], the calculation of Rðm; nÞ is formulated as an optimization problem which can be solved using adiabatic quantum evolution [6]. Here we present evidence of an experimental implementation of the RNA using adiabatic quantum evolution and show that it correctly determines the Ramsey numbers Rð3; 3Þ and Rðm; 2Þ for 4 m 8.…”

Reference [3] (and the Supplemental Material [7]) showed how to count the number of m-cliques C N m ðaÞ and n-independent sets I N n ðaÞ in an N-vertex graph G using its associated bit string a. “…A few months later, "D-Wave One", a 128-qubit machine based on super-conducting qubits [7] experimentally demonstrated the ability to compute twocolor Ramsey numbers [2,8] making it the largest experimental implementation of a scientifically meaningful quantum algorithm. This success provides an incentive for finding problems that could be solved efficiently on a * Electronic address: itayhe@physics.ucsc.edu quantum annealer.…”
