Ramp metering: modeling, simulations and control issues

Cédric Join,
Hassane Abouaïssa,
Michel Fliess

Abstract: The aim of ramp metering is to improve the highway traffic conditions by an appropriate regulation of the inflow from the on-ramps to the highway mainstream. Our presentation rests on several improvements: 1) Our simulation techniques do not need contrarily to other approaches any heuristic fundamental law. 2) There is no need of crucial time-varying quantities, like the critical density, which is most difficult to estimate correctly online. 3) Our feedback loop, which is stemming from model-free control, is e… Show more

“…Since its introduction by M. Fliess and C. Join, [16], (See e.g. [18] for a detailed presentation), the indisputable practical successes of model-free control explains why it has already been summarized recently many times: [1], [3], [18], [15], [19], [28], [29], [35], [36]. This leads us to present only the general scheme and the main equations.…”

“…Model-free control is defined as an original concept based on the algebraic estimation and it is independent of any precise mathematical model of the system to be controlled. Since the first work of [24] several concret and successful applications around the world has be developed in most diverse fields as intelligent transportation systems [31], [35], [33], robotic [32], energy management [30], . .…”

“…In addition, its corresponding intelligent controllers are easy to tuned and to implement (See, e.g., [24], [25], for an indepth presentation of model-free control and the meaning of intelligent controllers). Since it introduction in the field of automatic control, MFC already had many successful concrete applications (See e.g., [27], [28], [29] [30], [31], [32], [33], [34], [35] and the references therein).…”
