Raman Study of the Structural Distortion in the Ni1–xCoxTiO3 Solid Solution

Abstract: Raman spectra were collected on Ni1-xCoxTiO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) ilmenite samples as a function of the temperature between 4 and 1200 K. An evident symmetry lowering from the prototype R3̅ symmetry is observed. The distortion was largest for the x = 0.40 and 0.50 samples and significantly diminished for small and large values of x. The distortion was preserved in the whole temperature range and, except for the x = 0.50 sample, did not show significant changes. Notably, between 25 and 69 K, distortion of the x = 0.40 s… Show more

“…The low‐frequency band suggests that the symmetry of the film is lower than R3¯, in line with discussion given in Ref. . The distortion is characteristic to Ni 1 −x Co x TiO 3 solid‐solutions: Ni and Co rich compounds do not have this 3 d ‐orbital overlap related band.…”

“…5(d), of the sample J are consistent with the Ni 1Àx Co x TiO 3 spectrum measured from a ceramic bulk sample with x ¼ 0.50. The film J exhibits similar low-frequency distortion as was found in bulk Ni 1Àx Co x TiO 3 ceramics [17], shown in the inset of Fig. 5(d).…”

“…The appearance of ferromagnetism is consistent with the idea that the anomaly is not related to a covalent bond formation. Structural distortions, present already at room temperature, are observed also in the bulk Ni 1 −x Co x TiO 3 Solid Solution . In thin films, similar distortions appear in the ilmenite‐like sample J(0.03).…”
