Raman Structural Study of Copolymers of Propylene with Ethylene and High Olefins

Abstract: Summary: Nascent form of random copolymers of propylene with ethylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, and 4-methyl-1-pentene was studied by Raman spectroscopy. The most significant spectral alterations with a change in propylene content were observed in two lines at 809 and 841 cm À1. The first line corresponds to vibrations of polypropylene helical chains in the crystalline phase, while the second one is associated with vibrations of polypropylene helical chains having isomeric defects. Raman data confirm that… Show more

“…c) show additional vibrational bands at 1060, 1080, 1130, 1290, and 1412 cm −1 characteristic of PE . These bands match with the presence of a PP + PE blend instead of only coPP/PE in skin tape, since the Raman spectra of coPP/PE do not show PE peaks.…”

“…Similarly, with the increase in comonomer content the band at 1166 cm À1 merges with the more intense band at 1126 cm À1 . The alkyl branches of the comonomer are not able to enter the crystal lattice, 22 and hence, an increase in the fraction of a a and a b is observed.…”

“…14,15 PE/polypropylene (PP) blends have also been quantied and being thermodynamically immiscible, 16 the phase composition and crystallinity for the individual blend components has also been determined. 22 The rst of these bands corresponds to vibrations of the helically oriented PP chains in the crystalline phase, while the second one is associated with vibrations of the helically aligned PP chains with signicant amounts of conformational defects, localized in the amorphous phase. [18][19][20] The internal mode region of the spectrum has been grouped into three frequency regions, namely the C-C stretching region between 1000 cm À1 and 1200 cm À1 , the CH 2 twisting modes near 1300 cm À1 and the CH 2 bending modes between 1400 cm À1 and 1500 cm À1 .…”
