Raman spectroscopy of model membrane monolayers of dipalmitoylphosphatidic acid at the air-water interface using surface enhancement from buoyant thin silver films

Abstract: A novel method for the acquisition of surface enhanced Raman (SER) spectra of model membranes of dipalmitoylphosphatidic acid (DPPA) in Langmuir layers at the air–water interface is reported. The approach is based on the electrochemical formation of a buoyant thin layer of coalesced silver colloids in the vicinity of the phosphatidic acid head groups at the interface. This Ag layer is an excellent platform for SER scattering, which shows the spectral features from all parts of the molecule and water between th… Show more

“…These Raman modes are associated with the vibration of CH2 groups (particularly C-C stretching; 1062 cm -1 , 1129 cm -1 ), CH2 twisting (1295 cm -1 ) and CH2 bending (1439 cm -1 and 1461 cm -1 ). [2][3][4][5]7 These spectrum were compared with the spectra obtained from the analysis of authentic standard of saturated fatty acids with even-number carbon chain lengths between 12 and 18, fatty alcohols with carbon chain lengths of 16 and 22 as well as with two different species of phospholipids: 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate (DPPA) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). Even-chain species were chosen due to their high-prevalence from biological sources in the ocean biota.…”

“…Of the natural sources, sea spray aerosol (SSA) and mineral dust are the major contributors of the total global aerosol mass. [4][5][6][7][8] Primary SSA is formed at the air-sea interface upon the rupturing of bubbles entrained from breaking waves. [9][10][11] The ability to better define the radiative effects of primary SSA particles will require that their chemical and physical characteristics, as well as their ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei, be established in more detail.…”

“…This provides a high spatial resolution in SERS, which can overcome the optical resolution restricted by the diffraction limit of laser light. 9 Various applications of SERS for the detection of molecules at a solid surface or an air/liquid interface have been performed previously, 10 but only a few measurements have been conducted at a liquid/liquid interface. A liquid/liquid interface is a twodimensional field with different physical and chemical properties from the bulk phases.…”
