Raman spectra and elastic properties of KPb 2 Cl 5 crystals

Abstract: Raman scattering spectra and elastic constants of KPb 2 Cl 5 crystals have been studied. The results obtained are interpreted in terms of the ab initio lattice dynamics model taking into account multipole moments of ionic electron envelopes. The experimental results have been found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation; the narrow phonon spectra are shown to be due to a considerable contribution of heavy cations into the eigenvectors of the higher frequency lattice modes.

“…According to the Raman scattering spectra, the maximum phonon energy of the KPb 2 Cl 5 lattice is only ∼202 cm −1 so that the multiphonon relaxation rates are low [1]. This crystal has a broad transparency in the spectral range from 0.3 to 22 m [2].…”

“…The X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis of KPb 2 Cl 5 shows that there are two distinct Pb 2+ sites, Pb(1) and Pb(2), each having a C 1 site symmetry. Pb (1) and Pb(2) coordinate with six and seven chloride atoms, respectively (Fig. 1b).…”
