We have measured the specific heat of zincblende ZnS for several isotopic compositions and over a broad temperature range (3 to 1100 K). We have compared these results with calculations based on ab initio electronic band structures, performed using both LDA and GGA exchangecorrelation functionals. We have compared the lattice dynamics obtained in this manner with experimental data and have calculated the one-phonon and two-phonon densities of states. We have also calculated mode Grüneisen parameters at a number of high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. The electronic part of our calculations has been used to investigate the effect of the 3d core electrons of zinc on the spin-orbit splitting of the top valence bands. The effect of these core electrons on the band structure of the rock salt modification of ZnS is also discussed.

There is ever-growing interest to develop intrinsic white light emitting single-phase phosphors that have high CRI, devoid of bluish tinge, ease of synthesis and are scalable. Herein, manipulating vacuum pressure to instigate white light emission in Cu 2 + -doped-ZnS phosphors is reported. The detailed X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy confirm the cubic phase of Cu 2 + -doped-ZnS phosphor having agglomerated particles (~130-150 nm). The incorporation of Cu 2 + in the ZnS lattice is substantiated by the anti-Stokes shift of Raman peaks and shifting of XRD peaks to higher 2θ values. Upon increasing Cu 2 + doping concentration, the resulted decrease in the FWHM of XRD peaks implies shrinkage of the ZnS lattice. Interestingly, by tailoring the excitation wavelength, the stoichiometry of dopant ion, and defect states by varying the vacuum pressure, the optimized ZSC-3 (3% Cu 2 + -doped-ZnS) displays the origin of clear blue, green and red emission bands, consequently giving rise to white light emission (CIE values: 0.345:0398). The PLQY and average lifetime calculated for ZSC-3 are 5.98% and 1.5 ms, respectively. Such intense white light emission prompted to fabricate a prototype using a 310 nm UV LED. It exhibits high CRI (97) and warm CCT (4538 K), meeting highly desired values for a white light-emitting phosphor for different lighting and electroluminescence applications.

This study aims at synthesizing zinc sulfide (ZnS) thin films using spray pyrolysis method. The effect of the Zn concentration on the physical properties of ZnS is investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, photoluminescence (PL), and Raman spectroscopy. XRD shows a preferential orientation along the (111) direction corresponding to the ZnS cubic structure. Based on the XRD results, it is seen that low zinc concentrations compared to sulfur content can increase the crystalline quality of films. Raman spectra confirm the presence of the ZnS cubic structure observed by XRD and show the presence of sprayed ZnS vibrational modes for all films. PL emission spectrum of ZnS confirms the presence of Zn and S atoms at all molar concentrations. SEM reveals densely packed and uniformly distributed grains with precise shapes. The elemental analysis confirms the growth of stochiometric Zn/S ratio. The optical analysis shows a high transmittance around 88% in the visible range of the solar spectrum with optical band gaps varying from 3.4 to 3.6 eV. These properties are interesting and show that ZnS thin films can be used as buffer layers in thin film solar cells applications.
