Cultural identity and its impact on today’s multicultural organizations

“…Anthropology not only helps us to understand how culture as a variable explains human diversity by means of language, beliefs, values and customs but also establishes the link with cultural identity in the sense that individuals have a culture of origin (or several); this culture (these cultures) is (are) part of their cultural identity. According to Sevänen (2004), in its beginning, anthropology did not systematically take into account the self-definitions and self-understandings of the peoples the anthropologists investigated and were more focused on describing concepts such as culture, nation, race and tribe. It was later, with social and cultural anthropology, that anthropologists became interested in specific questions of identity.…”

“…It thus appears that cultural identity research has been overshadowed by the national culture studies that tend to predominate in international management research, even though issues regarding cultural identity have grown ever more complex in today’s cross-cultural and global settings. National identity refers to a collective group identity often containing mythical elements linked to a country’s history (distant or past stories), while cultural identity refers to a personal identity with an individual dimension.…”
