Raising awareness in model-based energy scenario studies—a transparency checklist

Abstract: Background: The focus of the paper is on scenario studies that examine energy systems. This type of studies is usually based on formal energy models, from which energy policy recommendations are derived. In order to be valuable for strategic decision-making, the comprehensibility of these complex scenario studies is necessary. We aim at highlighting and mitigating the problematic issue of lacking transparency in such model-based scenario studies.

“…The openness of code and data are identified as key requirements for energy system models [19] to comply with scientific standards like improved reproducibility and greater scrutiny [20]. By allowing reuse and collaborative development, open models and data can increase productivity and -through greater transparency [21] -also increase credibility in the policy discourse [22]. Further, they allow for public participation [17].…”

“…In this sense, energy system modellers face the challenge to provide at least all relevant assumptions in a traceable and transparent way (cf. [5]). In this context we want to point out the difference between transparency and openness.…”
