Raising Awareness about the Consequences of Human Activities on Natural Environments through Multisensory Augmented Reality: Amazon Rainforest and Coral Reef Interactive Experiences

Abstract: Reverse engineering is of great interests for computer aided verification of freeform shapes. Accurate model is crucial to assure the validity of geometry assessment. Freeform reconstruction is especially challenging when the parts are thin and/or self-occlusion. An integrated measuring system was proposed by incorporating laser scanner into hardware mechanism on reconstructing model of complex shape. Mathematical model mapping the transformation relationship between system components and cylinder-based algori… Show more

“…National Geographic launched an Instagram cover that allows users to see, projected in AR, the climate data expected for 2070 of twelve different cities around the globe (www.nationalgeographic.com). Changing Earth, a multisensory AR experience designed for museums, aims at improving the users' engagement in exhibitions and generating awareness about the dramatic outcomes of pollution on the environment (Gardoni et al, 2020). Unexpected Growth, an art installation on the 6th floor terrace of the Whitney Museum of American Art by Tamiko Thiel, aims at engaging the public on both the threat of plastic waste and coral bleaching caused by global warming (www.tamikothiel.com/unexpectedgrowth).…”

“…Proceedings of the Fourth South American International Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Conference, Lima, Peru, May 09-11, 2023 © IEOM Society International Gardoni et al (2020) presented the development of two interactive augmented reality experiences aimed at raising awareness about the negative impacts of human activities on natural environments, particularly the Amazon rainforest and coral reefs. The experiences use multisensory feedback to create an immersive and engaging learning experience for users.…”
