“…4 The functions most widely used have been the conditional probability functions (CPFs) and the source contribution functions (SCFs). 1 These functions have been used in Spain for different purposes; Gimeno et al [14][15] and Hernández et al 16 for the study of the sources of wet deposition major ions, Hernández et al 17 and Rúa 18 for sources of SO 2 in European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) stations, and Gimeno et al 19 for the study of the sources of surface ozone in Spain.…”

“…Several previous studies have been done with the aim of redefining CPFs so that the influence of time prior to the measurement is included. In 1995, Gimeno et al 14,15 defined new functions to determine sources of rainwater acidity and in 1997, Gimeno et al 25 found air pollutants emissions patterns related to high SO 4 2-and NO 3 -concentrations in the air of Logroño. The main finding reached in this latest article is the high influence of the S-compounds emissions 18-hr before the measurement on the sulfate concentration.…”

“…The main sources of pollutants for Spanish EMEP stations and the characteristics of acid wet deposition in Spain have also been documented. [12][13][14][15] All data were corrected for ocean influences according to the procedures of Keen and Galloway 16 to give more importance to its anthropogenic contribution than its natural one. Na + was used to represent sea salt in a method similar to that used by Bridgman.…”

“…In this study we used statistical tools and information about the trajectories by means of the CPF functions. A good summary of this technique is given by Gebhart and Malm [6] and examples of their use in Spain can be found for sources of wet deposition of majorions [16][17][18], for sources of SO 2 , NO X , SO^~ and NO 3 [3,19,20] and for study of the sources of surface ozone in Spain [21]. (Figure 1), six stations belonging to EMEP network. The EMEP stations have the following characteristics: They must be placed in rural areas, away from building areas.…”
