Railway is the backbone of transport system in India. Rail accidents occur more due to derailments than collision or fire in trains. These derailments are due to cracks in the railway tracks. Therefore, there is an immense need of crack detection and security system. This paper proposes the crack detection system in the rail tracks. This is to avoid rail accidents by using latest communication technologies. In this project GSM communication protocols are used to convey the message of crack detection via SMS. Crack detection is achieved by using the concept of eddy current losses implemented in the terms of darlington pair circuit. With the detection of cracks, the system also alerts the railway authorities facilitating the security system.

It has been found that major cause of the Railways accidents is due to the derailment attributed to the cracks developed on the rails. Crack development and its prolongation happens due to regular movement of locomotives, absence of timely detection. The maintenance lapse poses serious questions on the security of Railways transport operation. Manual detection of cracks on locomotive-tracks by maintenance team is arduous task, time consuming, irregular due to environmental factors and tight scheduling of trains, which may lead to maintenance work errors. This project aims at addressing the issue of crack detection by ultrasonic crack detection system, which would work in real time, with the control action taken to avoid major accident. Ultrasonic crack detection system is mounted on the locomotive itself, include precision ultrasonic sensor, LCD display, GPS module and its power supply. System will detect crack, subsequently it will generate Visual warning-signal for the authorities and generate location coordinates of the Crack. This will help for authority to generate caution signal for locomotives running on the same track for slow movement and emergency maintenance action could be undertaken. Leakage in oil, gas, or water pipeline networks is a global concern; its impact has serious consequences on the ecosystem. Several solutions have been either proposed or in service for monitoring the pipeline networks. These proposals, however, are expensive, time-consuming, and most are intrusive which necessitate interrupting ongoing operations. The advances in sensing technologies made it possible to build affordable non-intrusive solutions. However, building a sensor network that is able to continuously monitor the pipeline, detect, and report any anomaly poses a number of challenges: node placement, energy saving, data flow, throughput, and just to mention a few. This paper presents an adaptive clustering algorithm for grouping and deploying multiple sensors along the whole pipeline. By using this algorithm, each group of sensors selects adaptively a cluster head, which aggregates the incoming traffic from its members and then delivers it to the next cluster head and so on until it reaches the base station. The simulation and prototypebased experiments' results have shown significant energy saving compared to contemporary approaches.INDEX TERMS Wireless sensor networks, pipeline monitoring, linear topology, optimal node placement.
