Railways play a major role in the global transportation system. Furthermore, railways are presently being promoted by several governments thanks to their economic and environmental advantages relative to other means of transportation. Although railways have clear advantages, they are not free of environmental problems. The objective of this book is to review, assess, and provide solutions to the impacts of railways on wildlife. We have divided the impacts of railways on biodiversity into four main topics: mortality, barrier effects, species invasions, and environmental disturbances, with the latter ranging from noise to chemical pollution. Railways share several characteristics with roads and with power lines when the trains are electric. Therefore, much can be learned from studies on the impacts of roads and power lines, taking into account, however, that in railways, the two are often combined. Besides the similarities with roads and power lines, railways have specific characteristics. For instance, railways have lower traffic intensity but trains usually have much higher speeds than road vehicles, and the electric structures in railways are typically lower than in most power lines. Thus, railways pose specific challenges and require specific mitigation measures, justifying calling the study of its impacts on biodiversity "railway ecology."

Increasing the acceleration and deceleration of trains within a railway network can improve the performance of the system. However, the risk of passengers losing their balance and falling is also increased. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the effect of longitudinal vehicle accelerations on passenger safety and comfort. The literature review brings together two separate disciplinary areas, considering the effects of acceleration on balance from a physiological/kinesiological perspective, as well as looking at the results of previous empirical studies on the levels of acceleration that railway passengers will tolerate. The paper also describes an experiment carried out on the Tyne and Wear Metro, which gathered data on typical acceleration levels to compare against the findings of the literature review. It was found that both the magnitude of the accelerations and their rate of change (jerk) are important. The results also suggest that there may be scope to improve the trade-off between journey times, energy consumption and passenger comfort by fine control of the acceleration/jerk profile. This is particularly relevant to urban rail systems, as they typically feature relatively high acceleration and deceleration. However, the findings for passenger comfort are equally applicable to conventional regional and intercity services.

-Rolling stock RAMS is a field of engineering which integrates reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) characteristics into an inherent product design property through rolling stock system engineering process. It is implemented to achieve operational objectives successfully, and recently the RAMS has become a rapidly growing engineering discipline because it has a great potential to ensure safety and improve cost effectiveness. However, the Korean rolling stock industry has not yet implemented RAMS management in the rolling stock engineering process, despite the issue having been addressed since the introduction of the KTX. Thus, this paper discusses the processes, methods and techniques for RAMS assessment in three parts. Firstly, it outlines a process of the overall RAMS performance assessment for achieving technical RAMS design criteria. Secondly, it discusses a process for assessing the operational RAM and allocating the RAM. This paper also proposes a model for assessing safety-based risk management, which includes five analytic techniques for identifying the causes and consequences of a system failure. Finally, a case example is provided for the risk assessment of the pneumatic braking device.
