Radon in Groundwater of the Northeastern Gran Canaria Aquifer

Abstract: Abstract:222 Rn has been detected in 28 groundwater samples from the northeast of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) utilizing a closed loop system consisting of an AlphaGUARD monitor that measures radon activity concentration in the air by means of an ionization chamber, and an AquaKIT set that transfers dissolved radon in the water samples to the air within the circuit. Radon concentration in the water samples studied varies between 0.3 and 76.9 Bq/L. Spanish radiological protection regulations limit the c… Show more

“…The occurrence of U-and Ra-bearing minerals of rocks and the degree of rock fracturing are the main factors influencing the 222 Rn concentrations of groundwater (e.g. Loomis et al, 1988;Ball et al, 1991;Vinson et al, 2009;Cinti et al, 2013;Alonso et al, 2015). Water temperature also affects the Rn concentration, since the 222 Rn solubility decreases as water temperature increases (Andrews and Wood, 1974;Roba et al, 2000;Clever, 2013).…”

“…In an effort to provide an adequate supply of safe water for household consumption, geochemical characterization of groundwater resources in volcanic-hydrothermal areas and geochemical mapping of geogenic contaminants represent essential steps to define the necessary tools for decision-making in territorial planning (e.g. Rahman et al, 2005;Angelone et al, 2009;Baiocchi et al, 2013;Alonso et al, 2015;Cinti et al, 2015).…”

“…Water contain radionuclides as natural components in various concentrations depending on their origin as discussed by different researchers (Duggal, Sharma, & Mehra, 2017;In acio, Soares, & Almeida, 2017;Mittal, Rani, & Mehra, 2016;Nevinsky, Tsvetkova, & Nevinskaya, 2015;Thabayneh, 2015). Radon levels in water has been studied by previous studies (Alonso et al, 2015). Radon is released into waters as a result of natural processes like decay of its parent nuclide 226 Ra.…”
