Taiwan is tectonically situated in an oblique collision zone between the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) and the Eurasian Plate (EP). Continuous observations of gamma rays at the Yangmingshan (YMSG) station and soil radon at the Tapingti (TPT) station were recorded in the volcanic area and around a major fault zone, respectively, in Taiwan for seismic studies. A number of anomalous high gamma ray counts and radon concentrations at certain times were found. It is noted that significant increases of soil radon concentrations were observed and followed by the increase in gamma rays a few days to a few weeks before earthquakes that occurred in northeastern Taiwan. Earthquakes such as these are usually related to the subduction of the PSP beneath the EP to the north along the subduction zone in northern Taiwan (e.g., ML=6.4, April 20, 2015). It is suggested that the preseismic activity may be associated with slow geodynamic processes at the subduction interface, leading to the PSP movement triggering radon enhancements at the TPT station. Furthermore, the further movement of the PSP might be blocked by the EP, with the accumulated elastic stress resulting in the increase of gamma rays due to the increase in porosity and fractures below the YMSG station. The continuous monitoring of the multiple parameters can improve the understanding of the relationship between the observed radon and gamma ray variations and the regional crustal stress/strain in north and northeastern Taiwan.

The features of the atmospheric γ-background reaction to liquid atmospheric precipitation in the form of bursts is investigated, and various forms of them are analyzed. A method is described for interpreting forms of the measured γ-background response with the determination of the beginning and ending time of precipitation, the distinctive features of changes in the intensity of precipitation and the number of single (separate) events that form one burst. It is revealed that a change in the intensity of precipitation in one event leads to a change in the γ-radiation dose rate increase speed (time derivative). A method of estimating the average value of the intensity and amount of precipitation for one event, reconstructing the intensity spectrum from experimental data on the dynamics of the measured dose rate of γ-radiation, is developed. The method takes into account the radioactive decay of radon daughter products in the atmosphere and on the soil surface during precipitation, as well as the purification of the atmosphere from radionuclides. Recommendations are given for using the developed method to correct for changes (daily variations) in radon flux density from the ground surface, which lead to variations in radon in the atmosphere. Experimental verification of the method shows good agreement between the values of the intensity of liquid atmospheric precipitation, calculated and measured with the help of shuttle and optical rain precipitation gauges.

STRESZCZENIE: W pracy przedstawiono nową metodykę pomiarową spektrometrii gamma dla rdzeni wiertniczych reprezentowanych przez skały o niskiej aktywności. Opisano w niej części składowe nowo zaprojektowanego spektrometru wraz z dedykowanym oprogramowaniem testowym. Badania prowadzone według zaproponowanej procedury stosowane są głównie do rdzeni formacji piaskowcowych czerwonego spągowca, dla których dotychczas w Polsce nie wykonywano pomiarów gamma. Pierwsze testy na rdzeniach piaskowcowych prowadzono z wykorzystaniem standardowego spektrometru-gamma logger BGO (GL), przy wydłużonym czasie pomiarowym, co pozwoliło uzyskać zaledwie częściowe wyniki dla wybranego odcinka rdzenia. Opracowanie nowego urządzenia wykorzystującego dwa niezależnie mierzące detektory BGO, umieszczone pod kątem 90 stopni w ołowianym tunelu (aparatura GLGT) umożliwiło dwukrotne skrócenie czasu pomiarowego, poprawienie dokładności wyników oraz obniżenie poziomu detekcji dla analizowanych pierwiastków (potas, uran oraz tor). Wstępne badania porównawcze w otworze testowym ukazały różnice pomiędzy aparatem GL i GLGT. Polegały one na poprawie jakości rejestrowanych danych w szczególności dla uranu i toru, które w przypadku standardowych analiz przyjmowały wartości mniejsze od tła pomiarowego. Dodatkowe badania przeprowadzono na wzorcach kalibracyjnych w postaci walca o znanej koncentracji pierwiastków promieniotwórczych, których wyniki posłużyły głównie do oceny rozdzielczości obu metod. Seria pomiarów rdzeni z otworu J-1 pozwoliła otrzymać dokładne wyniki porównawcze z aparatów GL i GLGT, które przedstawiono na tle profilowań geofizyki otworowej oraz badań laboratoryjnych. W przypadku tego testu wyniki z aparatury GLGT wykazały się poprawą dokładności, lepszym dopasowaniem do profilowań oraz poprawą rozdzielczości pionowej w stosunku do geofizyki wiertniczej. Uzyskane wyniki pomiarów spektrometrem GLGT wykorzystano do określenia tła pomiarowego, szacunkowej rozdzielczości oraz określenia dokładnych zawartości potasu, uranu i toru w otworach archiwalnych. Wyniki końcowe przedstawiono w postaci krzywych spektrometrycznego profilowania gamma.
