Radiotherapy for Orbital Lymphoma

Abstract: Radiotherapy alone yields excellent local control and overall survival rates in orbital lymphoma stage IE. Local irradiation is also well tolerated and effective in advanced NHL stages with orbital infiltration. Doses of > 36 Gy resulted in an increase of late complications.

“…While most studies in the literature reject the idea of extended OS as a result of chemotherapy [2,13,18,27], the assessments of its value on RFS are inconsistent. Guadagnolo et al and other authors noted no increase in RFS [13,18,25,26,39], yet two other studies [1,23] did find extended RFS after combined-modality therapy.…”

“…The presence of shields for further conforming the small fields employed aggravates the situation. Researchers, thus, optimize their conjunctival lymphoma treatments based on recovery rates of patients [2,10]. Pure Monte Carlo simulations are able to cope with the problems related to small fields and to yield accurate results with the associated statistical uncertainties.…”

“…Due to the high intrinsic radiosensitivity of lymphomas mediastinal radiotherapy represents a valid treatment option, although clinical data are very limited [12,13]. Corresponding to the results of the German Hodgkin Study Group [11], additive radiotherapy in the area of bulky disease could be useful for patients with no complete remission after chemotherapy and is still an integral part within combined-modality treatment [2,9].…”
