Studies in the metabolism of 241 Am are usually concerned with its retention by the alleged critical organ(s), i .e . skeleton and/or liver . Recently, pathological lesions and neoplasms of some endocrine organs as well as an influence of 241 Am on the reproductive ability have been reported (Hammarstrom and Nilsson 1970, Ovcharenko 1972 a, b, Rudnitskaya and Moskalev 1970, Taylor and Bensted 1969 ; there are, however, only few and inconsistent observations relating to the retention of 241 Am by endocrine organs of rodents (McKay, Brooks and McClellan 1972, Seidel and Volf 1972 b, Zalikin, Moskalev and Petrovich 1968 . Data on the effect of DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) are also limited (Johnson, Watters, Level, Lagerquist and Hammond 1971, Seidel and Volf 1972 b) . The present study deals with the retention of 241 Am by some endocrine organs of the rat as influenced by treatment with Ca-DTPA and (for reasons to be discussed elsewhere (Seidel and Volf 1972 b)) with Zn-DTPA.Female albino rats (175-205 g) were injected intravenously with 0 . 3-0 . 6 µCi 241 Am-citrate (pH 7 . 5-8 . 5) . Treated animals received 12 intraperitoneal injections of Ca-or Zn-DTPA (30 µmol . kg-1 ) as indicated in the table . The animals were killed 7 days after the last DTPA-dose .
