“…Mercury ( 197 Hg and 203 Hg)-labeled chlormerodrin, introduced by Reba et al (1962a, 1962b), was the main radiopharmaceutical for renal imaging in the 1960s. The key informants reported a wide use of 131 I-iodohippurate for renal imaging in the mid-1960s to mid-1980s.…”

“…As yet the most reliable screening procedure used in our patients has been carried out with radioactive mercurial compounds, the scintiscan and speed of uptake being the criteria. 22 And this procedure is useful only when negative, for many patients who did not have renal ischemia causing their hypertension have shown abnormalities; but so far all but three of our proved 32 cases since the test has been available (operation performed and normotension resulting) have had an abnormal test with this procedure, an error of 10 per cent. The test is not disagreeable to the patient, offers no halzard, and is not time-consuming.…”

“…The chlormerodrin uptake curve Immediately following the administration of '97Hg chlormerodrin there is an immediate rise in count rate over both kidneys followed by a more gradual rise over the next 2-3 hr due to accumulation and retention of the radiopharmaceutical by the tubular cells (Reba, McAfee & Wagner, 1963;McAfee, Reba & Chodos, 1967). The rate of uptake is dependent on effective renal blood flow.…”
