Radiological protection of the patient in veterinary medicine and the role of ICRP

Abstract: At the request of the Main Commission of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), Task Group 107 (TG107) was set up to consider the issue of radiological protection of the patient in veterinary medicine. TG107, who authored this article, brought together information relating to the use of diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology in veterinary medicine. A number of specific areas were identified that appeared to be appropriate for attention by ICRP. These included the use of dose quantit… Show more

“…These values can be used to calculate an effective radiation dose for specific organs; however, it must be recognized that these values are based on values produced for human use and the clinical implication for companion animals is not currently known. 34 In addition, the use of effective radiation dose to provide a measure of the risk of carcinogenesis is not recommended. 35 It is beyond the scope of this communication to provide in-depth recommendations regarding the acquisition of high-quality images with CT in cases involving metal implants.…”

“…Individual animals should be protected in veterinary applications of ionising radiation. The area of veterinary practice is rapidly expanding, with many radiological medical procedures originally developed for human use being employed for animals (Pentreath et al 2020 ; IAEA 2021 ; ICRP 2020a ). This raises questions regarding how and why ionising radiation is used in veterinary practice (e.g., in situations that may not be medically indicated).…”
