Radiological characterization of granitoid outcrops and dimension stones of the Variscan Corsica-Sardinia Batholith

Abstract: This study focuses on the radiological characterization of granitoid outcrops and dimension stones using in situ gamma-ray spectrometry. Extensive measurements were performed on 210 granitoid outcrops of the Corsica- Sardinia Batholith. The large statistical sample allowed us to improve the analysis by considering a log-normal distribution of radioelements and propagating the uncertainties using Monte Carlo method. The activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra (238U) and 232Th in C-SB area were 1,177-304 ?408, 60-… Show more

“…For the risk assessment and calculation of the annual effective radiation dose, further studies and calculations on indoor and outdoor radiation exposure doses would be needed (e.g., Grasty and LaMarre 2004;Puccini et al 2014). Knowledge of background radiation and definition of regional baselines are crucial for (i) identifying areas or rock types with high natural radiation background to reduce health risks and (ii) for the separation of contaminations from natural background radiation in emergency cases (Marsac et al 2016).…”

“…Data were finally processed in a geographical information system and a map produced. Th were measured using a portable gamma ray spectrometer in 32 representative outcrops (Table 1) of magmatic and surrounding metamorphic rocks, following the procedure reported in Puccini et al (2014) and references therein. Also these data were processed using a Matlab-derived script in order to confirm the internal compositional changes of the pluton.…”

“…Magmatic rocks and metamorphic high-grade rocks have been characterized for their U, Th and K composition (Puccini et al, 2014). The portable gamma-ray spectrometer adopted for this study consists of an NaI(Tl) single crystal with a cubic shape (10.…”
