Radiolabelled Stripped Mucin, SM3, Monoclonal Antibody for Immunoscintigraphy of Ovarian Tumours

Abstract: A new monoclonal antibody, SM3, against stripped mucin core protein has been evaluated for the radioimmunoscintigraphy of ovarian cancer. It was radiolabelled with In-111, I-123 and Tc-99m and results showed a sensitivity of 95%, 100% and 100% and an accuracy of 73%, 86% and 100% for malignancy; respectively.

“…The accuracy of 99mTc-SM3 in this study, 93% (42/ 45), compared favourably with that for 11 ~In-SM3, 73% (22/30), and ~23I-SM3, 86% [21]. It also compares favourably with other published studies with other antibodies with these radiolabels [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…However, the specificity, although the numbers are small, is much improved over 1111n-SM3, which has a specificity of 33% [20,21]. This is thought to be due to a number of factors [22,23].…”

“…Previous studies in ovarian cancer using 99mTc SM3 have shown less than 20% human anti-mouse antibodies and no clinical reactions (Granowska et al, 1990). They were not evaluated here.…”

“…of patients: 10-45). These findings appear to indicate that radioimmunoscintigraphy with 99mTc-MAb-170 represents a reliable diagnostic tool in cases of ovarian carcinoma [2,6,7,13,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”
